Nancy L. Zimpher, a widely recognized leader in higher education, civic engagement, economic development and urban education reform, is Chancellor of the State University of New York. She is the first woman in the 60-year history of the system, to be named to the post.

Prior to her arrival at SUNY, Dr. Zimpher served as the president of the University of Cincinnati (UC). Zimpher has also served as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she led the university from 1998 to 2003. Prior to her appointment in Wisconsin, she was the Executive Dean of the Professional Colleges and Dean of the College of Education at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Zimpher is the co-author and co-editor of books on university leadership as well as books on teacher education and urban education. She also has authored and co-authored many monographs, book chapters, and academic journal articles related to academic leadership, school/university partnerships and teacher education.

Chancellor Zimpher holds a bachelor’s degree in English education and speech, a master’s degree in English literature, and a Ph.D. in teacher education and administration in higher education, all from The Ohio State University.
